English Street Bridge Closure

In the New Year, works to the CityLink Tulla Widening will mean changes to the way you get in and out of Essendon Fields. 

CityLink Tulla Widening, Melbourne Airport to Bulla Road – English Street bridge closure, Tuesday 3 January – Wednesday 25 January 2017
 
Works on the English Street bridge will finish for 2016 at 6am, Thursday 22 December 2016. The bridge will be fully open to traffic over the Christmas and New Year period.
 
English Street bridge closure: 7am Tuesday 3 January – midday Wednesday 25 January 2017
 
Major works will start on the English Street bridge at 7am on Tuesday 3 January, when the bridge will be fully closed, to remove and rebuild it before it re-opens by midday on Wednesday 25 January.
 
VicRoads are removing and rebuilding the bridge to cater for an additional lane on the freeway underneath and additional lanes on the bridge itself.
 
There will be no access to Essendon Fields and Airport West using the bridge during this time, with detours in place.  Access to Airport West and to Essendon Fields will be available at all times during the works via the detours below. Access will be available at all times to and from Essendon Fields via Wirraway Road.
 
The English Street entry and exit ramps will remain open as much as possible with some nightly ramp closures required.
 
A shuttle bus for pedestrians and people with disability will operate between Matthews Avenue, Airport West and Essendon Fields. This service will be 24 hours, with extra services during peak times.
 
Tullamarine Freeway closure: 10pm Thursday 5 January - 10am Sunday 8 January 2017
 
A full closure of the Tullamarine Freeway, between the Calder Freeway and the M80 Ring Road will be required for 60 hours between 10pm Thursday 5 January and 10am Sunday 8 January.
If you are heading to Melbourne Airport or the city using the Tullamarine Freeway during those three days, plan ahead and allow 40 minutes extra travel time.
There are two outbound detour routes to ensure everyone gets to Melbourne Airport as quickly as possible. The main detour for Melbourne Airport traffic will be via Pascoe Vale Road and the M80 Ring Road.
Please note that the heavy vehicle detour route outbound to Melbourne Airport is via Calder Freeway and Keilor Park Drive.

Tullamarine Freeway closed in both directions between the M80 Ring Road and the Calder Freeway.
 
Signed detours in place to travel from the Melbourne Airport to the city. Detour routes via  Airport Drive, Sharps Road, Keilor Park Drive and the Calder Freeway, and Tullamarine Freeway, M80 Ring Road, Keilor Park Drive, M80 Ring Road and the Calder Freeway. Allow 40 minutes additional travel time.
 


 

10pm Thursday 5 January – 10am Sunday 8 January
 

Tullamarine Freeway closed both directions between the Calder Freeway and the M80 Ring Road.  
 
Signed detours in place to travel from the city to Melbourne Airport. Detour route for light vehicles via Pascoe Vale Road, and the M80 Ring Road.  Detour for other outbound traffic and heavy vehicles via Calder Freeway, Keilor Park Drive and Sharps Road. Allow 40 minutes additional travel time.

Access to Essendon Fields and Airport West during Tullamarine Freeway closure. English Street bridge and associated ramps will also be closed during this time.

Leaving Essendon Fields and Airport West during Tullamarine Freeway closure. The English Street bridge and associated ramps will also be closed during this time.
 
Signed detours will be in place to exit Essendon Fields and Airport West during this closure with Wirraway Road open at all times. Allow up to 25 minutes additional travel time.
 


 

From 7am Tuesday 3 January – midday Wednesday 25 January

Changes to pedestrian/cyclist access during English Street bridge closure.
 
A shuttle bus for pedestrians and people with disability will operate between Matthews Avenue, Airport West and Essendon Fields. This service will be 24 hours, with extra services during peak times.
 
The bus will stop at existing bus stops near selected Route 59 tram stops along Matthews Avenue, Westfield Airport West, and at key locations in Essendon Fields, including the existing shuttle stop on English Street and two temporary stops near Auto Centro. See map below.
 
Cyclists will be able to use Matthews Avenue, and Wirraway Road to access Essendon Fields, or alternatively, the shuttle buses can be boarded by cyclists with their bicycles.
 
The bus is expected to take between 12 to 20 minutes to travel between the bus stop located at the corner of Earl Street and Matthews Avenue to English Street. 

Pedestrians should allow an additional 30 minutes to travel between Airport West and Essendon Fields on the shuttle bus during the bridge closure.
 
The shuttle bus will be signed ‘English Street bridge pedestrian shuttle bus’.
